We are joined by Tameka Johnson, a Tigerlily ANGEL Advocate who was a child when first diagnosed with cancer. Listen as we discuss navigating survivorship, the importance of knowing your body and advocating for yourself. Tameka shares her journey of survivorship and her path to becoming a resilient thriver. Episode #2 Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About – Your Voice in Advocacy!

Hearing the life-altering words, “you have breast cancer” or “you have an 87% chance of developing cancer, amongst other cancers” can be scary no matter what age you are or how familiar you are with the medical system. These incredible women, Paige and Dani have taken to social media to “keep it real” and share how cancer has impacted their lives from their authentic perspectives. They are fun, creative, open and honest, which have been contributing factors to a community that needed more real and empowered voices.

In this episode we talk with Paige More co-founder of The Breasties (an all-inclusive nonprofit organization that creates community for survivors, previvors, Stage 4 thrivers, and caregivers impacted by breast and gynecologic cancers) and the incredible Dani Trops (advocate, influencer and educator).

Episode #3 Understanding Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Survivorship: Life with Cancer

In this episode, we talk with two survivors diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Maimah Karmo and Jonell Deshotel. Watch, listen and learn as they get personal about their experience in addition to sharing facts, empowerment and education.

Jonell describes that when she felt the lump, she intuitively knew what it was. Growing up as a teenager, Jonelle learned about breast cancer through her mom’s diagnosis. It was her experience as a caregiver then as a patient that led her to advocacy and becoming a Tigerlily ANGEL Advocate Lead. “There are more and more women being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, women under 40, Women of Color.”

TNBC tends to grow and spread more quickly than most other types of breast cancer, studies also reporting African-American women are 3 times more likely to develop TNBC than white women. We are doing something to empower Black women and working together to make sure we have a better outcome.

Episode #4 Health Literacy in Navigating a Cancer Diagnosis

In this episode, you’ll meet Kathryn Jackson who had to have a crash course in cancer after her diagnosis. She had to learn important terms, cancer treatments, potential side effects, side effect management, and more – especially now that her cancer has returned as Stage IV metastatic breast cancer.

The Covid-19 Pandemic caused significant delays in cancer care. Routine scans were delayed for serval months after initial diagnosis and treatments, so when Kathryn was able to get her scans, it showed that cancer had returned. The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic are far reaching with significant life changing impacts for millions.

While it’s hard to digest complex information, with significant health implications, Kathryn is doing everything she can, asking questions, and working hand in hand with her medical team but not without challenges. Katheryn has experienced delays in treatment when waiting for insurance approvals which also require additional medical follow up, extra documentation, paperwork, and justification from the medical team as to the necessity and urgency of these medications. To satisfy the insurance needs, both patient and provider must shift focus and demonstrate to the insurance companies why these medications are essential for Kathryn’s fight for survival. All this is happening while time is of the essence. We hope you’re empowered by Katharyn’s story.

Episode #5 Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Amina was in the best shape of her life, beginning a career as a professional dancer and living the life in New York. Life was exciting, she was setting goals for the future, training intensely, and life had endless possibilities until a Stage IV cancer diagnosis put a pause on everything.

The signs were there that something was happening in Amina’s body, but because she was only 21 years old, she was dismissed by healthcare providers, and found herself spun in circles trying to navigate the medical system and in getting a diagnosis.

Watch Amina as she talks about her pathway to diagnosis with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and how she embraced self-advocacy, became educated and empowered throughout her treatment, determined to get back to the life she had. Today, life is no longer on pause. Amina Battled Cancer Like a Boss and even during treatment her mind was still on dance, choreography and building a career. Now, with renewed life and no evidence of disease, she is living the life of a professional dancer, and as an advocate and spokesperson for the young adult cancer community.

Recovery and Discovery: Finding a Pathway to Heal From Your Scars | BREATHE Tv Season 4 Episode #8

Neosho had recently completed her PhD. enjoying life as a professor and looking for a meaningful job to launch her professional career. Life was moving according to plan until the day she found a lump. The pathways to diagnosis was challenging being 36 at the time of diagnosis, many people still think that young women do not get breast cancer. Neosho credits Obamacare with saving her life allowing her to get the treatment she needed.

Listen as Neosho talks about her process of recovery and discovery, the pathway to healing from her scars both internal and external. Treatment included surgery, chemo, radiation followed by reconstruction which is not uncommon with a HER2+ diagnosis. Neosho experienced significant complications during radiation, underwent 8 surgeries, her pathway to healing was challenging and her scars were significant.

Neosho was determined to fight for her life and share her story to give hope to other women. While still looking for a full-time job following treatment, Neosho wrote a memoir about her breast cancer journey, GOD’S GOT JOKES. Neosho’s diagnosis hasn’t stopped her from educating, empowering, and uplifting her community and is a Tigerlily Foundation Lead ANGEL Advocate.

29 years old.
